Tybee Post Theater

Tybee Post Theater is a beautifully restored historic theatre built in 1930 as a movie house for soldiers stationed at Fort Screven Army base. After going dark in the mid-1960s, this community treasure reopened in September 2015 following an extensive restoration by the nonprofit Friends of the Tybee Theater. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and 206-seat intimate venue located in the Fort Screven Historic District, the theatre operates as a performing arts and cultural center integral to island life. Historic Military Theatre Heritage

Built in 1930 by the U.S. Army, the Tybee Post Theater served as a movie house for soldiers stationed at Fort Screven and was the highlight of recreational activities for military families. Notably, it was one of the first theatres in Georgia equipped to show "talkies" (sound films). Famous patrons included base commander Gen. George C. Marshall and his wife, future President Dwight Eisenhower, and Savannah's legendary composer Johnny Mercer. Officers and their families had reserved seats on the three back rows. At WWII's end, the building was declared surplus and sold, operating as the Beach Theater until the mid-1960s when it went dark for 50 years.

Community-Driven Restoration

After sitting vacant for 30 years and suffering a devastating fire, the theatre faced demolition in 1999. The City of Tybee Island and Tybee Island Historical Society intervened to save it. Friends of the Tybee Theater (FOTT) formed in 2001 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to restoration. After 15 years of fundraising (including $350,000 in SPLOST funding, historic preservation grants, and community donations), the theatre reopened in September 2015 with modern air conditioning, comfortable seating, professional sound and lighting, a gorgeous stage, and a restored historic marquee and box office.

206-Seat Intimate Venue

The restored theatre offers 206 seats in a modest Greek revival building with red brick and white wooden cornices. The intimate capacity creates exceptional audience-performer connection for concerts, films, and live performances. Professional quality projection, sound, and lighting equipment ensure modern entertainment experiences in a historic setting. The venue sits in Fort Screven Historic District just a block from the Atlantic Ocean.

Year-Round Diverse Programming

Tybee Post Theater presents live music concerts almost every weekend featuring local Savannah musicians, tribute acts, singer-songwriters, and touring artists from across the country spanning all genres. The theatre also screens first-run films, classic movies, and children's films, plus hosts comedy performances, theatrical productions, dance performances, lectures, and special cultural events. This variety ensures entertainment options for residents and tourists throughout the year.

Workshops & Educational Programs

Beyond entertainment, the theatre offers enrichment programs including acting workshops led by industry professionals (directors and actors from Dynasty, Tom Swift, Chicago Med, Snowfall, The Vampire Diaries, and other major productions), sound healing sessions, and various cultural workshops. These programs support the nonprofit's mission to serve as an integral part of the island community and enhance cultural experiences.

Nonprofit Community Mission

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, Friends of the Tybee Theater operates the venue to serve as an active vital arts center for Tybee Island. The mission focuses on preserving this historic treasure while operating it as a performing arts and cultural center integral to community life. The organization relies on ticket sales, donations, memberships, and community support. Attending shows directly supports arts preservation on Tybee Island.
